Lake Marathon
In the historic municipality of Marathon, 28 km from the centre of Athens, lies the dam of the artificial Marathon Lake.
Marathon Tomb
This is the site where the fallen soldiers from the Battle of Marathon are buried. The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC, during the first Persian invasion of Greece.
Archeological Museum
The museum mainly houses findings originating from the Battle of Marathon and from the Egyptian temple built nearby.
Marathon Run Museum
The permanent exhibition of the “Olympic Marathon” showcases, for the first time to the public, the history of the Olympic Marathons from 1896 to 2000.
About the Ride
Your day will start with a personal pickup by your English-speaking driver from your hotel or apartment in Athens. After a brief introduction, you will board your private ride and embark on a 45 km journey from Athens to Marathon – the town where the famous Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC.

The drive will take you to Lake Marathon, the perfect spot to explore or take a swim. This artificial lake, located in the northeastern part of Greece, provided water to Athens from 1931 to 1959. Next, you will visit the Marathon Tomb, a monument dedicated to the 192 Greeks who triumphed over a massive Persian cavalry at the Battle of Marathon. According to legend, a messenger ran approximately 40 km from the battlefield to Athens to announce the Persian defeat. After delivering the message, the messenger died from exhaustion, and his legendary run became the foundation for the marathon race. After spending time at this historical site, you will conclude the trip at the Marathon Run Museum, where you can explore the history of Olympic Marathons and an exclusive sports collection dating back to 1896.
At the end of your ride, your friendly driver will drop you off at your accommodation.

Although the drivers are very knowledgeable regarding the points of visit, at no point can they be compared with a licensed tour guide who can give more in depth information regarding historic facts and information. If you would like to include an official tour guide in the experience please let us know via email after the booking is completed.
